1964 Ford Thunderbird
History
The Ford Thunderbird is a rear wheel drive automobile which was manufactured by Ford in the United States over eleven model generations from 1955 through 2005. The Thunderbird created a market niche that eventually became known as the personal luxury car.
For 1964 the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off appearance, which was mostly evident when viewing the car from the side or rear. Hinting at its roots in the previous generation Thunderbird that it evolved from, the new model retained a similar grille design with quad headlights.
Why This Car Is Special
The new 1964 Thunderbird was offered in hardtop, convertible, and Landau versions. The Rangoon Red one we have at Skyway Classics has the 300 horsepower 390 cu in FE V8 which continued as the standard engine for the Thunderbird. It is paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission.
Mechanical
As stated earlier these Birds came with the powerful 390 cubic-inch V8 is with the four-barrel carburetor, correct gold painted valve covers and air cleaner assembly, and an engine compartment what looks like it was back in 1964. Everything looks factory correct.
The V8 fires up easily and has a great exhaust note out the rear dual exhaust system. Options and features include power steering, factory spinner hubcaps on red painted wheels with newer white sidewall tires, front disc brakes and more.
Interior
The correct #55 code bright red interior really completes the red on red theme with power bucket seats, a white power folding roof, power windows! a complete set of factory gauges including a speedometer and other gauges. The controls for the AM/FM radio and factory air conditioning rest in the chrome center console.
Exterior
The trim tag shows this Bird to be painted from the factory the same color it is today, Rangoon Red. The trim is good and it even still has the rear fender skirts which combine with its classic lines that still look sleek today.
Conclusion
This 1964 Ford Thunderbird Convertible we have at Skyway Classics is a true survivor. This is the car The Beach Boys had a song about! You too can enjoy the fun in the sun with the top a down when you buy it and make it your own.
